Using Insurance for Mental Health Therapy in Utah and Idaho

Summary:

  • Insurance is accepted for all mental health therapy for those in Utah and Idaho.
  • Nutrition-only services are usually not covered unless it's with a registered dietitian (but you might contact your insurance to be sure).
  • I work at two different clinics where I take different insurances; be sure to check the practice location if you are seeing my name on your insurance company's website.
  • If I'm not in-network with your insurance, we can bill out-of-network. See tool below to check possible coverage.
  • HSA/FSA cards are accepted for psychotherapy and supplements.
  • I am willing to work with bishops, grant programs, or other third-party payers if needed.

In-Network Insurance

Please note that using insurance, whether in-network or out-of-network, requires an official diagnosis that goes on your permanent medical record. If you are concerned about privacy or eligibility for life insurance, a pilot license, or military service, finding another way to pay for therapy may be better for you.

Psychotherapy or Counseling

I can take insurance for psychotherapy (AKA "counseling") sessions.

Please note that insurance is accepted by location. If your insurance told you I'm in-network, you'll need to make sure you are scheduling with me at the right office.

Found Me on Your Insurance Company's Website?

Insurance companies only approve providers by practice location, so just because I'm in-network doesn't mean I can take your insurance at any clinic.

You may choose to see me through River Hollow Mental Health, which is also located in Logan or online.

Out-of-Network Insurance

If I don't take your insurance at either clinic, you can utilize out-of-network (OON) benefits. If your insurance will cover nutrition with a nutritionist who is not a registered dietitian, we'll use a superbill. For mental health counseling/therapy, I use a billing service that submits OON claims on your behalf. You may only need to pay a co-pay, and that amount varies depending on your coverage. Use this tool or scroll down to check your coverage.

Nutrition Coverage

It is unlikely that your insurance will cover nutrition services with me because I am an unlicensed nutrition practitioner, but you can always contact them to ask.

For transparency, I am not a registered dietitian (RD). I am a certified Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (FNTP). So make sure you clarify that I am unlicensed when checking with your insurance to see if they will cover my services. They may only want to pay for services with an RD.

A Note for Anyone Using Insurance

If you don't think you'll meet your deductible by the end of the year, I advise paying the cash rate and not going through insurance. The financial cost will be about the same, in most cases, but paying cash makes it simpler for everyone and preserves your privacy. Further, certain diagnoses on your medical record (which is required by insurance) can create difficulties for you if you are hoping to get a pilot license, join the military, or certain other scenarios. This can be avoided by not using insurance.

Other Payment Options

HSA/FSA cards are accepted for all psychotherapy services, supplements, and labs. If you have a health savings account (HSA), I encourage you to use it! It'll save you money.

Discounts
  • You can get a 5% discount on general nutrition services by paying with Zelle.
  • Anyone who has an honest need for reduced pricing may contact me and we can negotiate an appropriate fee. I've been there, too!

Contact me if you'd like either of these options.

Other Third-Party Payers

Bishops/church leaders will usually pay for services for those in need and I'm happy to work with them to make sure you are taken care of.

I have also taken payments from Logan City for firefighters, and funding coming from other grants.

If someone else is paying for you (such as a parent or church leader) and you are a legal adult, you'll need to sign a release of information in case I need to contact them. A release is unnecessary for firefighters since their therapy is billed anonymously.
